Meet Oliver

The Garth Homer Society offers occupational programs to support people like Oliver to achieve their goals. Oliver and his employment counselor worked together to find just the right job to allow Oliver to work through the COVID pandemic. When asked what it was like to work during this time, Oliver said, “I feel lucky to have been able to work throughout COVID-19. People were calling us heroes and it felt great knowing that I was keeping my community safe and, in some way, making their day just a little bit better”.

Oliver started working for Thrifty Foods in November of 2019 and quickly adjusted to new routines as the store transitioned to COVID safety protocols. He was one of the people who many relied upon to ensure that they were safe when shopping for their groceries. As a cart retriever, he ensured that every cart was disinfected before being passed off to the next customer.

When asked what’s next for him, Oliver said, “I have big goals. I want to be independent, get a place of my own and work in the transportation industry. I love nothing better than the idea of people going off on new adventures. In my spare time I like to ride back and forth on the BC Ferries. I would love to work for them or the cruise industry.”

Oliver is a fine example of the great potential of clients that attend programs at the Garth Homer Society, and we look forward to seeing Oliver achieve his goals and aspirations in the future!
